Five Day Workshop on Modeling Water Flow and Contaminant Transport in Soils and Ground Water Rescheduled from August 6 to 11, 2010
Five day workshop on Modeling Water flow and Contaminant
in Soils and Groundwater has been organized at the Faculty of Agricultural
Engineering SAU Tandojam in collaboration with Higher Education Commission
from August 6 to 11, 2010. The aim of this
training workshop is to train and equip the faculty members and young
scientist related to soil and water with latest techniques of modeling
of water and solute transport in the vadoze zone.
Course Description
Although participants should have a general background in the principles
of soil physics and chemistry, the course gives an introduction to some
theoretical aspects of water flow and solute transport in soils, geochemical
equilibrium modelling and geochemical processes as cation exchange, surface
complexation and kinetic reactions. Most of the time, "Hands-on"
computer sessions will familiarize participants with the use of the software
packages viz. HYDRUS-1D, HYDRUS-2D, RETC, STANMOD, as well as with the
conceptualization of practical problems for numerical analysis.
Eligibility
B.E/BSc. in Agri. Engg. / Environmental Engg./Civil Engg. /Soil Science/Agronomy
and other related disciplines
Target Group
Faculty members, Researchers and postgraduate students
Venue
Computer Lab of Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Sindh Agriculture
University, Tandojam

Resource Persons
i. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal
Dr. Siyal has been working as a Professor in the Department of Land and
Water Management at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam. His area of
interest include water flow and solute transport in the vadose zone; analytical
and numerical methods for simulating water and solute movement in the
subsurface; description and measurement of the unsaturated soil hydraulic
properties; reclamation of salt-affected soils; preferential flow of water
and solutes in structured media; pesticide transport, efficient use of
water for irrigation using traditional methods. He has good command of
computing and modeling of solute and contaminant transport in the soil
vadose zone.
ii. Dr. Muhammad Saffar Mirjat
Dr. Mirjat is working as a Professor in the department of Irrigation and
Drainage at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam. His area of interest
include irrigation, drainage description and measurement of the unsaturated
soil hydraulic properties; reclamation of salt-affected soils; preferential
flow of water and solutes in structured media; pesticide transport, efficient
use of water for irrigation using high-tech methods. He has done his post
doc research on modeling of solute and contaminant transport in the saturated
and unsaturated zone.
