The
Department of Food Technology was
activated during 1996 and it started
its academic activities in 1998 as
per provision of PC-I of Sindh Agriculture
University, Tandojam. The purpose
of establishment of this department
is to meet the requirements of trained
manpower for strengthening food science
and industry in the country and to
impart quality education and to carry
out research in various discipline
of food technology to benefit the
farming community. Recently it has
been upgraded to the level of Food
Sciences & Technology, As has
been seen that most of the agriculture
produce are wasted up to 40% due to
lack of knowledge and shortage of
trained manpower in the field of processing,
preservation and post harvest technologies.
The Institute has given emphasis on
value addition of different agricultural
produce such as cereals, fruits and
vegetables through training the manpower
and conducting research on these aspects
of processing and post harvest technology
to reduce these losses. Apart from
these activities the Institute of
Food Sciences & Technology is
also engage in developing processing
technologies to convert the waste
produce into its consumable form so
that it can be consumed by human being
as food and can fulfills the nutritional
requirement, in impoverished rural
areas of Sindh / Country.
The
Institute has started direct admission
for award of four year B.Sc. Hons.
degree in Food Sciences & Technology
and is imparting educational program
similar to all the Food Technology
departments / Institutes of country
as a uniform curriculum to meet the
requirement of Higher Education Commission.
The Institute offers B.Sc. (Agri)
Hons, M.Sc. (Agri) Hons and Ph.D degrees
in Food Technology. Recently the program
has been switched over from term to
semester system.
The
Institute has initiated a unique short
terms training program on processing
and preservation of fruits and vegetable,
Capacity Building of Rural Women in
product preparation of Dairy and Agriculture
Commodities and Technology Transfer
for production of Bakery Products
for rural masses (for Male & Female),
preparation of various products and
food safety to train. The rural women
of the area. The Institute has established
strong linkages with different food
industries such as National Food Karachi,
Wazir Ali Oil Industry Hyderabad,
Dawn Bread Hyderabad, Pakistan Beverages
Hyderabad, Popular Food Industry Tando
Adam, Candyland and Cadbury Hub for
conduct of mutually agreed trainings,
research, and strengthening of practical
capacity of students and industry
personnels.
