The Department of Soil Science was
established for the purpose of promoting
education and research activities
related to soil and environmental
sciences. The department is housed
in its own beautiful building, separate
from faculty’s main building.
The department has teaching faculty
of 9 highly qualified subject experts
of whom 3 are PhD (all from overseas)
and another 5 are registered in PhD
Program. This department is offering
undergraduate to PhD degree courses
in Soil Science and is also offering
introductory courses of Soil Science
to undergraduate students of other
faculties of the University. The department
is producing qualified and competitive
graduates and post-graduates in agriculture
sector. The department has produced
hundreds of graduates, and post-graduates
including 2 PhDs. At present more
than 25 doctoral candidates are registered
in the department in addition to that
36 students are registered in M.Sc.
Program. The Department of Soil
Science is conducting the basic and
applied research in the field of soil
fertility, soil salinity, soil chemistry,
soil microbiology, quality assessment
of irrigation water, soil and water,
environmental pollution, plant physiology
and screening of salt tolerant varieties
of different crops. The department
believes in quality work, and the
faculty members of this department
are fully involved in curriculum development,
teaching of modules, guiding graduate
and postgraduates for their academic
research and report writing. In short
the department is playing dominant
role in HRD and R&D activities
in the field of soil and environmental
sciences. The department has strong
links with several national and international
bodies; Soil Science Society of Pakistan,
University Putra Malaysia, International
Centre for Biosaline Agriculture,
etc.
