Soil and Water are the most important
natural resources for the sustainability
of human and environmental system.
But unfortunately they are being used
unwisely resulting in threat to the
sustainability of agriculture and
environmental. So far, in Pakistan
enormous sums of money are spent on
the planning, design, construction
and maintenance of farm irrigation
systems but many fail to meet the
planned agricultural and social objectives.
Agencies now recognize that one of
the principle reasons for this is
the lack of human resources with the
appropriate technical and managerial
skills needed to operate and manage
the schemes successfully. Realizing
importance of management of water
resources at farm level, the Department
of Land and Water Management was established
in December, 1985 in the Faculty of
Agricultural Engineering.
The program offered by the department
blends the agriculture and applied
engineering sciences associated with
soil and water with appropriate organizational
and managerial skills. Land and Water
Management specialization had been
designed for students who wish to
pursue a career in the day-to-day
management of farm water conservation
and micro irrigation projects/schemes,
or in associated research and consultancy
work.
This department plays a dynamic role
in imparting quality education for
the efficient use of water and land
resources under the conditions of
salinity and water logging as well
as water scarcity. At present, this
department is offering courses at
undergraduate and postgraduate level.
