Water resource Engineering has been
given an enormous importance throughout
the world. In Pakistan water for irrigation
is essential due to aridity. Increasing
demand of food due to ever growing
population has put enormous pressure
on the assured water supply and its
efficient management. Major Mega projects
in the country have been launched
in the fields of irrigation, drainage
and water resources engineering. In
order to achieve sustainable agricultural
production and get optimal results
it stands imperative to understand
intricate and complex problems pertaining
to: planning, designing and utilizing
the available water resources judiciously
through better water conservation
techniques and improved water management
practices and removal of surplus water
and its safe disposal or its reuse.
Keeping in view the complexity of
the system and understanding the problems
encountered in planning, designing
and managing the water resources,
the department of Irrigation and Drainage
was established in 1970 to impart
knowledge of basic principles and
practices in the subjects to leading
engineering graduates through well
established class rooms, laboratories,
library and field farms.
The department has a well qualified
staff and has adequate and equipped
laboratories for conducting practical
and research work. The department
is actively involved in teaching and
research activities at undergraduate
and postgraduate level and contributes
more than 40% of the courses in a
composite degree of B.E.(Agri.). It
has an independent program of postgraduate
studies, i.e , M.E, M.Phill and Ph.D
in Irrigation and Drainage. Some information
covering important events and progress
pertaining to the department is reproduced
in subsequent paragraphs.
